# Placements

Find the placements that spend your ad sets' money for nothing, then exclude them or lower Meta's bids for them

Placements shows how each ad set did on each placement, such as Facebook Feed, Instagram Stories or Audience Network, over the last 30 days. It flags the placements that are wasting money, and says what Meta still lets you do about each one: exclude it from the ad set, or lower Meta's bids for it.

## The Placements screen

![Placements screen](https://3203600314-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FGlXujWJyreRidNjZDCw2%2Fuploads%2FWSTrtZiZIsafDgP2YyUL%2FPL-01.png?alt=media)

* ① **Placements**, under **Performance**
* ② **Conversion action**
* ③ the 30 days the figures cover
* ④ **Wasting**
* ⑤ **Action**
* ⑥ **Share of ad set spend**
* There is one row per ad set and placement, sorted by amount spent.
* The figures cover the last 30 complete days. They are read from Meta every night, so the screen has no date range.
* **Conversion action** chooses the conversion counted in **Conversions** and **Cost per conversion**. It changes your view only. The conversion that decides **Wasting** is set in **Wasting placement settings**.
* **Share of ad set spend** is the placement's part of what its ad set spent.
* **Filters** shows only some placements: by **Campaign**, **Ad set**, **Platform** or **Action**, or **Wasting only**. The download icon saves the rows as a CSV file.

## Wasting placements

A placement is **Wasting** when, over the 30 days, all three hold (the figures are the defaults, which you can change):

* it has no conversions;
* it spent at least the larger of **20** in the account's currency and **1.5 ×** the account's cost per conversion;
* its ad set has at least **3** conversions, so it's the placement that fails, not the ad set.

Hover over **Wasting** to see what the placement spent and where its threshold is. Traffic ad sets are judged on landing-page views instead of conversions. Awareness ad sets are shown but never flagged.

![Wasting placement settings pop-up](https://3203600314-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FGlXujWJyreRidNjZDCw2%2Fuploads%2FrTRk0B8v2PMzVgyvCinA%2FPL-02.png?alt=media)

① **Wasting placement settings** opens the pop-up: ② the minimum spend, ③ the multiple of the account's cost per conversion, ④ the conversions the ad set needs and ⑤ the conversion counted.

* The minimum spend can be up to 1,000,000, the multiple from 1 to 10, and the ad set's conversions from 1 to 1,000.
* **Conversions** chooses the conversion Wasting counts. **The account's default** is the result the account's campaigns optimize for.
* The settings belong to the ad account, and everyone who opens it shares them. They change the **Wasting** column at once, and the [Placement waste](/meta-facebook/overview-of-meta-accounts/health-alerts.md) health alert from its next nightly check.

## What you can do about a placement

The **Action** column says what Meta still lets you do about each placement. It depends on the campaign's objective:

| Action                    | When                                                                                   | What it does                                                                                                   |
| ------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Exclude** | Awareness and Traffic campaigns | Takes the placement out of the ad set, so it spends nothing there. |
| **Lower bid** | Other objectives, with the bid strategy **Highest volume** or **Cost per result goal** | Lowers Meta's bids for the placement through a value rule set. Ads can still appear there. |
| **Account controls only** | When neither applies, for Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and the right column | Opens Advertising settings in Ads Manager, where the placement can be switched off for the whole account only. |
| **-** | When nothing can be done from Adalysis | Hover over it for the reason. |

A change already made shows as **Excluded** or **Lowered**, with **Restore** where Adalysis made it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Meta took ad-set placement controls away from the Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales objectives in October 2026. Only Awareness and Traffic ad sets can still exclude a placement. For the others, a lower bid is the way left to spend less there.
{% endhint %}

### Exclude a placement

![Exclude confirmation](https://3203600314-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FGlXujWJyreRidNjZDCw2%2Fuploads%2FYyGJIOKEsIvTGAwvBoHx%2FPL-03.png?alt=media)

① Tick the placement, ② click **Exclude**, then ③ **Exclude** in the confirmation. ④ The confirmation warns of what else changes.

* You can tick placements of up to 25 ad sets at a time.
* Excluding a placement may restart the ad set's learning phase.
* An ad set on Advantage+ placements moves to manual placements: a fixed list of the positions Meta offers today, without the excluded one. Positions Meta adds later aren't used.
* Meta runs some placements only alongside another. For example, Instagram search needs Instagram Feed, and Facebook Marketplace needs Facebook Feed. Excluding one also excludes those that depend on it, and the confirmation says so.
* Before it writes, Adalysis reads the ad set from Meta. If its placements changed in Ads Manager since last night, nothing is changed. After it writes, Adalysis reads the ad set again: if Meta changed anything else, the change is undone at once.

### Lower bids for a placement

![Lower bid confirmation](https://3203600314-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FGlXujWJyreRidNjZDCw2%2Fuploads%2FhXLswX51Xb7t5ZIXn5AI%2FPL-04.png?alt=media)

① Tick the placement, ② click **Lower bid**, ③ choose how much to lower the bids, then ④ click **Lower bid** in the confirmation.

* Choose **25%**, **50%**, **75%** or **90%** (the default). Meta lowers its bids for the placement by that much. Ads can still appear there.
* The ad set's learning phase may restart.
* Adalysis adds a value rule set to the ad set, named "Adalysis: lower" and the placements, and shares it with every ad set lowered the same way. Meta allows only a few value rule sets per ad account.
* An ad set that already uses a value rule set made in Ads Manager can't be changed here: change it in Ads Manager.

### The outcome

After you confirm, a pop-up shows each change: **Excluded** or **Lowered**, or why it wasn't made. **Undone** means Meta changed more than asked, so Adalysis put the ad set back. **Not changed yet** means Meta couldn't take the change just now: try again later. **Check in Ads Manager** means the change was made but not quite as asked, or couldn't be checked, with a link to the ad set.

### Restore

![Restore](https://3203600314-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FGlXujWJyreRidNjZDCw2%2Fuploads%2F7g0KPEysMlWfUga6Xt6z%2FPL-05.png?alt=media)

① **Restore** undoes ② a change Adalysis made.

* **Restore** puts back an excluded placement, with any others the same change took out. For a lowered placement, it puts back the ad set's earlier value rule set.
* Meta may keep an ad set that was on Advantage+ placements on manual placements after a Restore. The outcome says so, with a link to the ad set in Ads Manager.
* Every exclusion, lower bid and restore is listed in [Change history](/meta-facebook/overview-of-meta-accounts/change-history.md).

## The Placement waste health alert

The **Placement waste** health check finds, each night, the ad sets that are On with at least one wasting placement. Each ad set is one issue, naming the placements that spent most. Its link opens Placements on that ad set's wasting placements. See [Health alerts](/meta-facebook/overview-of-meta-accounts/health-alerts.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.adalysis.com/meta-facebook/performance/placements.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
